Pinched Nerve

So you feel like you have a pinched nerve. You might have severe pain in a certain area of the spine that can feel sharp with certain movements. You may also be suffering from numbness and tingling or pain radiating down your arm or leg. A pinched nerve may also cause some weakness in one or more areas of the body.

Understanding how chiropractic services can help bring relief to a pinched nerve

So what is a pinched nerve? Well a nerve does not actually get pinched. Despite the name a pinched nerve actually refers to a peripheral nerve(a nerve exiting contained anywhere outside of the spinal cord) that is compressed or irritated by another tissue or fluid such as inflammation which accounts for the symptoms you are experiencing.

Causes of a pinched nerve

Many times a pinched nerve can be caused by a herniated disc somewhere in the spine. In the lower spine, a herniated or prolapsed disc may cause pressure on the nerve roots exiting out of the spine. This type of injury can result in lower back pain, or in many cases cause symptoms of sciatica. Sciatica symptoms include, but are not limited to, numbness and tingling down the leg or even weakness in the lower extremities of the body.

Symptoms of a pinched nerve

Likewise, if you are experiencing the symptoms of a pinched nerve in the neck you may experience pain, numbness or tingling, or weakness down the arms. Many of our patients come in complaining of carpal tunnel syndrome. Many times they have numbness and tingling in the hands and fingers. In this case, many times the problem does not actually exist in the hand or fingers, but the real problem is coming from irritation to the nerves exiting out of the neck. In other cases the symptoms may come from irritation to those same nerves in areas of the shoulder or elbow. It is important to not just look at the areas that you are experiencing your symptoms because many times the real problem does not exist in the same place. Think of what symptoms you hear about with a heart attack; pain in the shoulder for instance. If we focused on treating your shoulder we would be significantly missing a much bigger problem!

Relief from a pinched nerve with chiropractic care

Many times with rest, ice, and stretching, and conservative chiropractic care, the acute symptoms of a pinched nerve can resolve in days or weeks. What happens however is we neglect the underlying cause of the issue. These issues can come back, often times more frequently or more intense as the episodes go on. Sometimes the effects of this irritation on these nerves over time can lead to surgery!

Treating the cause of your problems not merely the symptoms

At Inspire Chiropractic and Wellness, we focus on treating the cause of your problems, not merely the symptoms. When the spine is out of alignment it can cause pressure or stress on the nerves exiting out of the spinal cord which ultimately can lead to problems such as a pinched nerve. Everyday our bodies are subject to small and large traumas, from sitting too long, sleeping on uncomfortable beds, or major traumas like slips and falls or car accidents that put stress on her spine and the nerves exiting out of the spine. This stress on the spine may cause symptoms, but you may not feel any symptoms at all! This is because only 10% of all of the nerves in our body are sensory nerves. This means that we can only feel about 10% of what is being disrupted in the body! By the time you start to FEEL symptoms, many times the problem has been going on for some time!

Our focus with chiropractic care is to remove this stress on the spine and nerves exiting out of the spine to get you feeling better, but more importantly to ensure that your body is functioning at its optimal level BEFORE these problems or symptoms arise. By removing this day to day stress, the wear and tear we put on our bodies on a daily basis, we can keep you feeling good but more importantly, functioning well!
