Osteoporosis?

A Closer Look at Osteoprosis

Osteoporosis is a degenerative disease affecting many men and women. Osteoporosis is a disease where the bones in the body become very frail and brittle. Bone is constantly breaking down and rebuilding. With osteoporosis the bones of the body break down faster than the body’s ability to repair it. When this happens it can take only minor stresses to cause fractures in the body. Coughing, sneezing, opening a window, or even bending over may cause a person to experience a fracture in the spine or in any other bone of the body.

Osteoporosis and Aging

Osteoporosis affects men and women, but women especially those post-menopause are more likely to suffer from osteoporosis. Many times this issue is not detected until a problem occurs.

Knowing the Signs and Symptoms of Osteoporosis

Some of the signs or symptoms of osteoporosis include:

  • Back pain due to a fractured or collapsed vertebra

  • Slumped over posture

  • Fractures due to mild stress that typically would not cause a fracture

  • Corticosteroid use

Your bones are constantly breaking down and repairing. Just like any other tissue in the body, the body is constantly changing and rebuilding. With osteoporosis, your body continues to rebuild however it breaks down the old bone much faster than it repairs it. As a result, your bone density begins to decrease, and you become much less able to handle the stresses of day to day life from gravity to lifting weights.

Corticosteroids and Rebuilding Healthy Bones

American’s in particular utilize corticosteroids in an exorbitant amount. Overuse of these types of drugs can lead to poor bone density as well. If you are or have taken corticosteroids it is important that you consume the proper nutrients necessary to rebuild healthy bone.

Causes Leading to Osteoporosis

Many times dietary insufficiencies can lead to osteoporosis. Calcium is necessary to build bones. If your diet is deficient in calcium you, an essential mineral used in bone creation, your body can not properly create healthy bone. Good sources of calcium include raw milk and cheese that eat a plant based diet. Calcium from food sources is absorbed much better than calcium supplementation.

In addition, vitamin D3 is necessary for calcium absorption. People think that simply taking a supplement of vitamin D3 is beneficial, however there is no substitute for getting vitamin D from the sun. Overusing sunscreen can prevent natural vitamin D from the sun from converting into Vitamin D3 in the skin. If you live in an area with low sun exposure there are certain tanning beds that can give you similar vitamin D as the sun. If either one of these two options are not available you can take an oral Vitamin D3 supplement.

There is also evidence that vitamin K2 in combination with Vitamin D3 and Calcium is likely beneficial at preventing fracture due to poor bone density. Dr Mercola has a great article explaining the benefits of this combination of supplementation to ensure bone health which you can find here.

Bones also need to be stressed in order to grow and develop. Doing weight bearing exercises such as squats or lunges can initiate healthy bone growth and development.

Treating Osteoporosis with Chiropractic Care

If you think you may suffer from osteoporosis you can talk with your doctor about getting a DEXA or bone scan to determine the density of your bones. Either way, maintaining a healthy diet and exercising are not only beneficial to look good, but can significantly improve your bone health.

  • Whiplash Treatment

Many times patients will be given a cocktail of medication in order to deal with the pain, muscle spasms, and inflammation that can occur due to a whiplash injury. However, while these medications address the symptoms of whiplash many times there can be underlying structural or neurological issues that arise from whiplash.

  • Sciatic Relief

Due to the specific nature of sciatic symptoms it is important to be evaluated to see what the best form of treatment is for your situation. Many times chiropractic care is the least invasive, most effective and cost effective treatment for the issue. A thorough consultation and evaluation is necessary to determine the best treatment options for you.

Whiplash?

Whiplash is an injury sustained to the cervical spine, or the neck, that can be extremely painful and lead to many serious long term problems and symptoms. Whiplash is trauma sustained to the neck where the head and neck are forcefully moved back and forth, like a cracking of a whip. Many times this injury is associated with automobile accidents, but whiplash can result from many traumas. Riding horses, collisions in sports, or even physical abuse can result in a whiplash type injury.

The common signs or symptoms that you may experience with a whiplash injury include neck pain or stiffness, headaches, and whiplash can also lead to neurological issues including pain or numbness and tingling down the arms.

Many times patients will be given a cocktail of medication in order to deal with the pain, muscle spasms, and inflammation that can occur due to a whiplash injury. However, while these medications address the symptoms of whiplash many times there can be underlying structural or neurological issues that arise from whiplash.

In a normal person the neck should be lordotic, or have a C-shaped curve open to the back of the body. During a whiplash trauma, many times this curvature can straigthen or even reverse. Multiple whiplash injuries can result in a more destabilizing condition causing an S-curvature to persist. While pain may not be immediate with a change in curvature there can be long lasting structural, muscular, and nuerological implications to an injury such as this.

Studies are now showing that the damage caused by a whiplash injury may not be evident for 7-10 years following the accident. A loss of a normal cervical curve can lead to early onset degeneration or arthritis in the spine as well as postural changes that can lead to lots of pain and aggrivation down the road. A loss of a normal cervical curvature will also lead to something referred to as anterior head translation, where your head starts creeping out in front of you causing you to start slouching forward. According to an article in a 2002 issue of the American Journal of Chiropractic, “Clinically, anterior head translation (AHT) has been shown to be a common postural displacement, with a conservative estimate being 66 percent of the patient population”1. This anterior head translation can cause severe increases in the amount of load that the spine itself and the supporting musculature would need to hold your head up on a daily basis. No wonder you feel so tired half way through the day!

If you let this issue go it can set you up for severe issues down the road. We utilize the most cutting edge techniques in our office to restore normal structure of the spine but also to address and muscle or soft tissue injury that you may have sustained in your accident.  Make sure you come on in to get checked out to see how chiropractic can help you not only feel better after an accident, but restore you back to optimal health!
