Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy
A mother-to-be should be able to fully enjoy her pregnancy; a time in her life that is supposed to be so incredibly exciting and joyous, but can sometimes be filled with pain and discomfort. Very often, pregnant women suffer from severe morning sickness, nausea, low back pain, swollen feet, and a multitude of other ailments that make their experience in pregnancy miserable. The body is a self-healing, self-regulating organism that when functioning optimally will express its best possible health potential. This is the goal of chiropractic care. Through chiropractic adjustments, women report feeling more comfortable and more importantly having a more enjoyable pregnancy and labor experience which will impact the relationship between mother and child far beyond any measurable amount of time. At Inspire Chiropractic and Wellness, we enjoy allowing women to change their perception of pregnancy and labor through chiropractic and enjoy those nine amazing months all the way through labor and delivery.
Benefits of Chiropractic Adjustments During Pregnancy
Although chiropractic adjustments during pregnancy can help facilitate a more comfortable and enjoyable pregnancy, the benefits of chiropractic care are much further reaching than just comfort.
The potential benefits of chiropractic adjustments throughout pregnancy include maintaining a healthier pregnancy, controlling symptoms of nausea, reducing the time of labor and delivery, relieving aches and pains associated with pregnancy, and preventing a potential cesarean section (c-section) or other invasive birth procedure. There are no known contraindications to chiropractic care during pregnancy.
Understanding Prenatal Chiropractic Care
A chiropractic adjustment positively affects the nervous system. The nervous system is the master control system of all other body systems including the reproductive system. During pregnancy, numerous physiological changes occur. Prenatal chiropractic care helps keep all of these systems balanced, and particularly focuses on establishing pelvic balance and alignment. A misaligned pelvis can lead to there being a reduced amount of room available for the developing fetus. This is referred to as intrauterine constraint. A misaligned pelvis also makes it difficult for the baby to find the vertex position. The baby may find this position unsuitable or uncomfortable and end up in a breech or posterior position which are both undesirable positions for delivery. This is what most commonly leads to dangerous, invasive birth interventions, such as a c-section, forceps, or vacuum extraction, and subsequently serious birth traumas.
How Inspire Chiropractic and Wellness Doctors Can Help You During Maternity
At Inspire Chiropractic and Wellness, one technique Drs. Dan Wilson and Megan Wilson utilize is the Webster Technique, which helps to balance the biomechanics of the pelvis and alleviate uterine stress in pregnant women allowing the baby to comfortably and naturally reposition to a vertex lie (the preferable head down position). In the July/August 2002 issue of The Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, it was reported that Doctors of Chiropractic that utilized the Webster Technique on women with a baby in the breech position, had an 82% success rate of babies turning to the vertex position.
As you can see, there are many benefits to getting adjusted during pregnancy for mom and baby!
